Step into the rich tradition of Appalachian balladry! Our open ballad swap is a welcoming space for singers to share centuries-old hand-me-down songs—stories of love, loss, mystery, and humor carried through the ages. Sign up to sing at the Info Table during the festival (limited slots available). Ballads are narrative songs that tell a story, and are often, but not always sung acapella. Our community and region is, and has been, home to incredible ballad singers. This swap is in honor of Caldwell County’s own Bobby McMillon-who performed at the old Happy Valley Fiddlers Convention nearly every year until his passing.Â
Not a singer? Come be part of the listening circle! Bring along a craft—knitting, whittling, mending, quilting—to work on while you enjoy the music, just as folks have done for generations.
